Youth urged to actively fight against genocide ideology
Youth have been urged to actively engage in the fight against genocide and its ideology. It was in a public talk delivered by Honorable Bizimana Evariste and Honorable Mutesi Anita, on this 05th December 2018, as Rwanda celebrates the 70th anniversary of United Nations Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
After summarizing the history of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi, Honorable Bizimana Evariste explained the importance of celebrating the anniversary the aforementioned convention as youth. He mentioned that youth should celebrate it because they are the Rwanda of tomorrow, and urged them to prevent genocide from happening again in Rwanda and elsewhere in the world. Honorable Bizimana advised staff and students to never tolerate whoever manifests genocide ideology acts so as to uproot genocide ideology.
Honorable Mutesi Anita explained the crime of genocide, genocide ideology, genocide denial and the punishment. She advised the young generation to partake in the journey of genocide prevention for a better future. Hon. Anita reminded students and staff that fighting against genocide and its ideology should be a duty.
In his remarks, Eng. Abayisenga Emile, the Principal of IPRC Musanze encouraged students to visit genocide memorials to learn more about genocide. With examples, the Principal explained the current situation of genocide denial and called upon students and staff of IPRC Musanze to challenge deniers by telling the world the truth. He requested staff and students to write the reality of Rwanda and tell the world the truth.
Fred Munanira, an Workshop Assistant at IPRC Musanze, said that the genocide ideology can be uprooted by going beyond Ndi Umunyarwanda & other good policies of genocide prevention and promote Ubumuntu (Humanity). He pointed out that a journey of eradicating the genocide ideology will be successful by the time everyone will be treated well and protected simply because he/she is a human being.
Shukurumungu Jean de Dieu, a student at IPRC Musanze, revealed the commitment of young generation in building the country. He mentioned that some of the youth, in past, destroyed the country, and now the youth as a whole are eager to maintain what has been achieved in Rwanda, and increase them in number. He mentioned that youth strive to make a socio-economic transformation in their communities.
Genocide was first recognised as a crime under international law in 1946 by the United Nations General Assembly (A/RES/96-I). It was codified as an independent crime in the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (the Genocide Convention).
