World Standards Day: “Video Standards can put a Country to a Global Stage.”
On the 16th October 2019, a team from Rwanda Standards Board (RSB) delivered a public talk to IPRC Musanze students and Staff. It was in line with the celebration of the World Standards Day 2019 celebrated on the 14thOctober 2019 under the theme, “Video Standards Create a Global Stage.”
During the public talk, the presentations and discussions revolving around this year's World Standards Day theme were made. IPRC Musanze community was encouraged to be innovative and develop software, technologies and other technological products and services that can put Rwanda at a global stage.
Ndayisaba Odysse, Technical Committee Chairperson at Rwanda Standards Board explained the role of standardization in promoting video and other multimedia services. He mentioned that Standards aim at ensuringsafer, more reliable and better quality of products and services, as well as giving greater freedom tothe consumers to choose between manufacturers.
Mubiligi Jean Pierre, the Senior Type Approval Officer at RURA, highlighted the type approval of ICT equipment, benefits and challenges for both regulators and consumers. He clearly stated that the type approval is done prior to the importation as it is determined by the article 62 of law n°24/2016 of 18/06/2016 Governing Information and Communication Technologies.
During this event, IPRC Musanze community got more information regarding Made in Rwanda certification services. It was clarified that the Made in Rwanda logo is a certification mark that is protected and only companies meeting theCertification Standards in their line of business are allowed to access the logo for their branding.
Eng. Mfingana Joseph, the Deputy Principal in charge of Academics and Trainings, expressed his gratitude towards RSB team for the fruitful lecturedelivered at IPRC Musanze. He mentioned that it was a good opportunity to get useful information regarding Standards, and it is mostly needed for young innovators and entreprenuers in TVET schools. He mentioned that it is very important for youth in TVET schools to know the Standards so that their projects and innovations legally fit the local and international market.
During the open discussion session, Nishimwe Isaac, a student in Electrical Engineering, appreciated the public talk delivered by RSB for it was helpful in his career path as a young innovator. Isaac has a project of a device that detects smokes and gas “Gas detector.” He recommended Rwanda Standards Board to put up some mechanisms that may help young innovators in IPRCs to get easily product certification.
As far as the local digital content promotion strategy and implementation plan are concerned, IPRC Musanze community was encouraged to benefit from the opportunities available in the digital content. The local digital content is a source for employment and entrepreneurship.
Celebrating the World Standards day is to pay honour to the joint efforts of the numerous experts, across the world, that voluntarily develop the technical agreements which are issued as International or National Standards.
In Rwanda the World Standards Day will be celebrated on the 31stOctober 2019, it will be celebrated under the theme, “Video standards can put a country to a Global Stage: Case of Made in Rwanda.”
