TVET Youth Challenge at IPRC Musanze
On this 12th June 2019, IPRC Musanze hosted a competition of innovations dubbed “TVET Youth Challenge,” organised by the Ministry of Youth to promote TVET students projects and viable prototypes to the next level of producing concrete solutions as well as generating revenues. The competition was under the theme, “Boosting Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Self-Reliance.”
The Government of Rwanda aspires to reach the upper middle-income status by 2035 that will require intense improvements in both the amount and the quality of human capital. Youth empowerment is one of the fastest approaches to ensure a sustainable and qualified human capital.
The overall objective for organizing the TVET Youth Challenge competition is to instil entrepreneurship spirit among students and support promising projects as well as connecting practical studies acquired in solving problems in the community.
Among eight projects selected for the competition, three won and were awarded. They were awarded as follows:
· The first prize (500,000Frw): Gas and Smoke Detector by Nishimwe Isaac
· The second prize (300,00Frw): Recycling Plastic Waste into Construction Materials by Niyomugaba Innocent
· The third prize (200,000Frw): Agahozo Meat Powder by Hirwa Ange J. Yvette.
The Manager of Single Project Implementation Unit at the Ministry of Youth, William Furaha, said that the Ministry of Youth organised such a competition to boost innovations and promote business ideas amongst youth; and the competition will help them to step up from business ideas to real businesses. He encouraged students to work hard and make projects’ prototypes that may help the community to solve the pressing issues.
The Principal of IPRC Musanze, Eng. Emile Abayisenga, expressed his gratitude towards the Ministry of Youth for such a good practice of promoting students business ideas. He mentioned that that effort will help to increase TVET awareness countrywide as the government moves forward to meet its target of ensuring that 60% of young people are enrolled in TVET schools by 2024.
The TVET Youth Challenge supports a perfect match between students’ practical knowledge with on-ground challenges. Set as a competition, the TVET challenge will be conducted in all higher learning TVET schools, whereby outstanding innovative applicable projects will be selected from t prototype phase to the on-ground running projects.
