STRYDE phase-out
On this 19th December 2017, TechnoServe that has been undertaking the Strengthening Rural Youth Development through Enterprise (STRYDE) met its partners, in Musanze district, including Musanze Polytechnic, as it phases out the STRYDE Programme. The latter started in 2014 with the aim of equipping the young people in rural areas with skills, training and mentoring to secure job and entrepreneurship opportunities.
Through the partnership, between Musanze Polytechnic and TechnoServe, which started in 2016, nineteen Musanze Polytechnic staff got trained on the STRYDE approach. Thereafter, they began training students who are in short courses programmes, and they extended that training to diploma students. STRYDE programme has been incorporated into courses that are taught at Musanze Polytechnic. Hitherto, Musanze Polytechnic has trained 52 young people, and some of them have started off-farm business.
After acknowledging TechnoServe and appreciating the STRYDE programme, Béatrice Niyigena, the Coordinator of Musanze Polytechnic Business Incubation Centre said that Musanze Polytechnic will keep on equipping students with entrepreneurial skills in all programmes; short course and A1. “Entrepreneurship has been initiated as a crosscutting course for all students at Musanze Polytechnic, thus we’ll continue to teach those who join our institution,” she clarified.
In his remarks, Tharcisse Mutabaruka, TechnoServe-Senior Business Adviser, revealed that STRYDE engaged youth in the off farm jobs through economic skills trainings. He stated that it has been successful in all corners of the country. “The number of youth engaged in income earning activities increased from 25% to 60%,” he explained.
During this event, Félicité Uwantege, Employment Promotion Officer at Musanze district, expressed her gratitude to TechnoServe for its contribution to help youth become entreprenuers. “Our youth are competing and winning at the national level in business competition. You helped many youth and enabled them to get started to the extent where they even employ others,” she said. “The unit of Business Development and Employment (BDE) is going to make a follow up to see how the created projects sustain by impacting the social welfare and the business growth,” she added.
The overall program goal is to sustainably improve livelihoods for rural youth and their households. STRYDE promotes the business management skills, financial literacy, personal development and confidence.
