Javan explained well the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Genocide Convention). The latter states that genocide can be described as any of the following acts with the intent to destroy in part or in whole, a national, racial or a religion: Killing members of a group of people, cause serious bodily mental harm on a group of people, intentionally endanger or inflict poor conditions of life on a group of people aiming at their physical destruction in part or whole, initiate and impose measures that will stop births among the members of a group of people, taking the children of one group away by force and give them to another group that is unknown and unrelated to them.
He reminded the public that the genocide crime must not go unpunished. “The crime of genocide is not subject to prescription,” he highlighted. He who is responsible for genocide and related crimes needs to be brought to justice. Thus, he mentioned, it is everyone’s task to promote justice and end the culture of impunity as we prevent genocide, its ideology and denial.
NKURAYIJA Eric, the Director of student Affairs, called upon the youth to participate in the prevention of genocide and its ideology. He said that the Genocide against Tutsi was stopped by the youth, thus the youth of today must play a role its prevention everywhere.
The purpose of the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime is to raise the awareness of the Genocide Convention and its role in combating and preventing the crime of genocide.
