IPRC Musanze celebrates World Environment Day
Students and staff were encouraged to play an active role in restoring ecosystem. It was in a public lecture delivered on this 03rd June 2021 by Eng. Aphrodice Niyigena, Instructor, and Jean Paul Divin Munyambonera, Assistant Lecturer in Irrigation and Water Engineering, in line with the celebration of World Environment Day under the theme of “Ecosystem Restoration”. The theme of this year was conceived globally as a means of highlighting the need for greatly increased global collaboration to restore degraded and destroyed ecosystems, to combat climate change as well as safeguard biodiversity, food security, and water supply.
Eng. Aphrodice highlighted that an ecosystem includes all living organisms, and their interaction with each other and their physical environment. He explained human activities that lead to degradation of land and marine ecosystems. He also explained the consequence of various human activities in destruction of ecosystem.
Jean Paul Divin Munyambonera explained various techniques that can be applied in restoration of environment among which there is restoration approaches restoration, rehabilitation, replacement, recreation, reclamation. a destructed ecosystem needs to be work on to revive the damaged. He encouraged students and staff to protect environment by taking part of global eco-system restoration starting from their homes.
In his remarks, Eng. Joseph Mfinanga, the Deputy Principal in charge of Academics and Trainings, pointed out that protecting environment is not only safeguarding our present but also the future of next generations. He stated that in Rwanda the population are increasing however the land is not increasing, rather some of human activities are destroying the land. Thus, he reminded both students and staff that if nothing is done, entire population can reach a point to where it cannot survive. He added that protecting environment is human being survival, therefore it has to be protected. He encouraged everyone to play his/her role in protecting environment and acknowledged good practices of Environmental Club at IPRC Musanze in promoting actions related to the protection of environment.
This public talk was a good opportunity for students and staff to reflect on critical challenges facing our ecosystems and take actions for restoration through research, environment and climate change mainstreaming as well as implementation of ecosystem restoration activities.
World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated annually on 5 June and is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment. First held in 1974, it has been a platform for raising awareness on environmental issue such as marine pollution, human overpopulation, global warming, sustainable consumption and wildlife crime.
