Foundation Stone Laying for IPRC Musanze extension
On this 30th May 2019, Hon. Minister of Education, Dr. Eugene Mutimura together with the Ambassador of China to Rwanda, HE Rao Hongwei, and other dignitaries laid a foundation stone at the site for the extension project of IPRC Musanze. The new buildings project, that will occupy 7,600 square metres, is fully funded by the Chinese Government at a cost of USD 16 million.
The Vice Chancellor of Rwanda Polytechnic (RP), Dr. James Gashumba, revealed that Rwanda Polytechnic with its 8 colleges cannot achieve its mission without the additional support of development partners, the private sector, and NGOs. He explained that to overcome challenges that faced by RP Colleges and the TVET sector in general it is necessary to raise awareness and advocacy for continuing support in the development of TVET instructions to improve the quality of training and contribute to the national transformation strategies.
This event is the result of the generosity of the government of the People’s Republic of China that provided the first phase grant of USD 12 million (current infrastructure), and the second phase grant equivalent to USD 16 million for this project. The completion of this project will make IPRC Musanze to be one of the best TVET institutions with modern infrastructure with well-equipped workshops and laboratories to deliver quality competence-based training.
Addressing the audience, the Chinese Ambassador to Rwanda, Rao Hongwei, stated China-Rwanda bilateral relations are at their best in history, as both sides are working closely to implement the agreements reached by the two countries. He mentioned that besides funding the expansion, China has supported IPRC Musanze in various ways, among others, setting up a technical skills development centre and a Chinese language learning centre in additional to providing workshop-training equipment and materials.
In his remarks Hon. Minister of Education, Dr Eugene Mutimura, revealed that the Ministry of Education is putting a lot of effort to expand and improve the quality of TVET delivery. He conveyed his gratitude to the Government of China for its continuing support to the government of Rwanda, specifically IPRC Musanze.
He added that the grant for the extension of IPRC Musanze is in line with the implementation of the policy of increasing the number of students who go through the TVET stream as compared to general education (up to 60% TVET). Therefore, the project will increase the capacity to absolve more students to TVET higher learning and hence attracts more youth to join TVET for a better future and competiveness.
The extension project will last for 18 months. It will add to the existing campus the classrooms, the administration offices, student hostels, multi-purpose hall, training workshops, and other functional rooms, according to officials.
